Spain is officially the world's healthiest country

Spain has risen to the top of the Bloomberg Healthiest Country Index, ranking 169 economies in accordance with factors that contribute to overall health

Spain topped the ranking in the 2019 edition, rising from sixth place in the previous gauge, published in 2017, and beating Italy to the crown. Four additional European nations were among the top 10: Iceland (#3), Switzerland (#5), Sweden (#6) and Norway (#9).

The index grades nations based on variables, such as life expectancy, while imposing penalties on risks, such as tobacco use and obesity. It also takes into consideration environmental factors, including access to clean water and sanitation.

In addition to being the healthiest nation worldwide, Spain has the highest life expectancy at birth among EU nations. Further, people in Spain are predicted to have the longest life expectancy in the world by 2040, beating Japan into second place - mainly thanks to their Mediterranean diet.

With a projected average lifespan of nearly 85.8 years, Spain - formerly in 4th place - will dethrone Japan, currently sitting atop the rankings with a lifespan of 83.7 years, but dropping to 2nd place in 2040.

So if you want to know the secret to a long - and maybe even happy - life:

Live in Spain!
