Modern Es Baluard museum

Mallorca exhibits its rich artistic and cultural life in the many exciting museums and galleries in both Palma and around the island. 

Art lovers often refer to the Es Baluard Museu d'Art Modern in Contemporani de Palma - Museum of Modern Art - as one of Palma's most renowned museums for contemporary art, but it's not quite right. In fact, Es Baluard is one of the most important of its kind throughout all of Spain, because of its ambition to act as a catalyst and engine for history, contemporary cultural trends and artistic formation.

Es Baluard was opened in 2004, and today its art collection counts more than 700 modern artworks by local, national and international artists. The museum exhibits art in all shades, structures, forms and sizes - from paintings to ceramics and abstract sculptures - and despite its status as exhibiting contemporary art from major parts of the world, Es Baluard also provides a fantastic showcase for local, fast-moving and forward-looking artists. Thus, the museum fully deserves its reputation as a national museum in the Balearic islands.

Besides the both permanent and changing exhibitions, the museum building itself is worth a visit. It's part of Palma's former military fort, which was integrated into the old city wall. And just outside the museum, the splendid view of the entire Palma bay is almost a piece of art in itself.
